"Ponyboy, I asked the nurse to give you this book so you could finish it. It was Johnnys handwriting. I went on reading, almost hearing Johnnys quiet voice. The doctor came in a while ago but I knew anyway. I keep getting tireder and tireder. Listen, I dont mind dying now. Its worth it. Its worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for. Some of their parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth itIve been thinking about it, and that poem, that guy that wrote it, he meant youre gold when youre a kid, like green. When youre a kid, everythings new, dawn. Its just when you get used to everything that its dayYou still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. Theres still lots of good in the worldYour buddy, Johnny.Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldnt be so quick to judgeAnd I decided I could tell people"
